40 años laborando en la ABC/ 40 years working at the ABC

On October 17th 1977, Bessy de Hércules began a journey at the ABC that she didn't know would last 40 years. It was the early days of our school, and although Bessy was the Headmaster's assistant, she often acted as translator, nurse and many other things!

She has worked with all of our Headmasters, from Mr. York to Mr. Keslake and has two sons who have graduated from this school. Although she has been here a long time, Bessy loves her job and our community has come to appreciate her warm and friendly greeting every time she answers the phone.

Thank you for your 40 years of service Bessy, we look forward to having you here for many more to come!

Two weeks ago, we received a visit from Joe Terrasi for the second year in a row.
Joe Terrasi is a Lead Trainer for the Positive Coaching Alliance, a United States based organization that strives to use youth sports as a positive experience to teach them important values such as respect, resilience and being ethical.  https://www.positivecoach.org/

The Positive Coaching Alliance's mission is "To transform the youth sports culture into a Development Zone where all youth and high school athletes have a positive, character-building experience that results in better athletes and better people .

In help the ABC work with this mission statement, the involvement of all members of our community is essential. During his visit, Joe was able to meet with members of our Student Council, Tribal Chiefs, staff and parents.

One of the highlight of Joe's visit was on Wednesday September 21st, when he hosted an afternoon meeting aimed at all of our Team Sports participants and their parents, to talk about how a school and home partnership is vital for sporting success, but more importantly, that there is much more to playing a sport than just focusing on winning.

The ABC's is proud of its commitment to the development of the Team Sports program and we are looking forward to our next visit from the Positive Coaching Alliance. We have an action plan which we are putting together to help develop our sports programme so it is excellent in every respect.

Asamblea de Independencia de Primaria/ Primary Independence Day Assembly

A yearly tradition, the Primary Independence assembly is a vibrant and joyous celebration of El Salvador's cultural heritage.
As a school that strives to create internationally minded citizens, it is important that our students learn to embrace their own culture so they can appreciate others.
This year's assembly featured typical Salvadorian dances, performances by the Lower and Upper Primary choirs, and even "El Torito Pinto" played on the xylophone and flute!

We would like to thank the Primary Spanish department for working so hard to put together an event in which all our students felt proud to live in a country with such rich heritage.

It was a difficult and close game for both teams right from the start, the first quarter was slow and was not productive for either team. However, during the second quarter, there was a 180 degree spin, as the ABC defense helped us to a four point advantage.
Nonetheless, Colegio Maya plying well, managed to steal the ball from us on two occasions, catching up and finishing the second quarter ahead of the ABC by two points.

During the third quarter, Colegio Maya moved its players around, managing to stall the Bulldog offensive, who were having a hard time getting to the basket, and when they did, they still found it hard to score.
It was during the final quarter that three recoveries of the ball and two baskets that paved the way to a Bulldog win.
The ABC Bulldogs became 2017 Estudiantil Champions during the final quarter, which was extremely close and during its first three quarters, very difficult to determine who the winner would be.

ABC 29 – 23 Colegio Maya

Congratulations Champions!!!

ABC 29 – 23 Colegio Maya
¡¡¡Felicidades Campeones!!!

Bienvenida a nuevos alumnos/ New student welcome

Every year, the ABC opens its doors to both local and foreign students into its three sections and this year was no exception.

On Tuesday, these new students were invited to talk with members of the Primary and Secondary teams while enjoying sandwiches and popsicles. The children were able to ask Mr. Keslake, Mrs. Short, Ms. Cáceres and various other members of our staff questions about the school, as well as share how they were settling in and sharing their experiences with each other.

We are very happy we have welcomed them to our school and cannot wait to see how they will enhance our community.

Last Friday, Grade 2 had a very exciting entry point for their new IPC unit, entitled Active Planet".
This topic deals with the idea of natural disasters:

"The tectonic plates that form the Earth’s crust are always moving. Even the smallest movement can cause huge earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis that devastate communities across wide areas. If we can understand what is happening underground we can learn to predict and protect ourselves in the future".

With this in mind, the Grade 2 teachers transformed their classrooms into places such as Relief and First Aid centres, in which all of the children were able to experience the effects of natural phenomena.

We would like to thank all the Grade 2 staff who put in so much hard work to make this activity a success and an example of what truly active learning means.

As  a yearly ABC tradition, our Grade 5 students took off for the UK at the end of June for 3 weeks of fun and British culture.

The students who go on this trip not only get to visit renowned British landmarks such as Windsor Castle, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace, they also take part in different activities such as rafting and visits to amusement parks, among others.

This trip not only brings students up close to the one of our school's cultures, it also allows them to foster independence and international mindedness; two traits we value enormously at the ABC.

UK Trip information meetings for current Grade 5 parents will be advertised soon, so be on the lookout if your child is interested in participating the coming year.

Congratulations to Carolina Avilés and her team for another fantastic trip for our children.

This past Thursday 15th of June, the lower corridor in Upper Primary was extremely lively and full of colour. This was thanks to this year's Primary Art Exhibition, in which pieces from Grades 1 through 5 were featured.

The exhibition was open to both parents and students during the school day, and was truly a testament to the cross curricular learning that goes on at the ABC. Ranging from Egyptian tomb paintings to wildlife portraits, each work reflected what the students had been learning about in their other subjects.

We would like to thank Mrs. Roxana Flores and Ms. Sandra Rivera for all the hard work they put into creating the displays and organizing the pieces that everyone enjoyed so much.

On Thursday May 11th, the Secondary school hosted a Parent Partnership event as a response to the diverse reactions caused by "13 Reasons Why", a Netflix original series.

The show tackles many controversial topics such as drugs, alcohol, relationships and ultimately, suicide. Due to the increasing popularity of the programme amongst teenagers, our LSU and Pastoral teams came together to show parents how to address the topics presented in the series. Although these issues might be hard to discuss, the show can be used as a springboard to teach our children how to handle difficult situations.

In the words of our Director, " I know that we all believe in a caring school community where we prioritise the safety, care and well being of our students, thereby creating an environment where they can develop academically, socially and emotionally. It is only by working together at these sort of events that we can really develop our ABC Cares programme."

We would like to thank everyone involved in planning this Parent Partnership evening and would also like to reiterate that if you have any suggestions for future events of this nature, to let us know so that we can help address issues of concern more effectively.

The Sound of Music/ La Novicia Rebelde

Once again, the ABC Performing Arts Department has delighted people all ages with their annual musical production.

This year, the audience was transported to Austria during World War II thanks to a fantastic performance of The Sound of Music.
The show included acting, singing, and even dancing from students of all ages, with some of our youngest cast members being only in Grade 1!

The show was a huge testimony to the incredible amount of effort put in by PAD staff, students and parents who worked tirelessly to learn lines, make costumes and design the stage.

We are extremely proud of everyone who participated and would like to encourage everyone to try out for next year's musical.
