Colour Run - Save the Children

This Friday, the end of the school day was a bit different than most, as it ended with the Colour Run, a race to benefit Save the Children, an NGO who works to reduce infant mortality and help El Salvador's children.

All of our Primary and Secondary students wore the official t-shirt for the event to enjoy a half hour of exercise, music and colour.

The day ended with prizes for the fastest runners and satisfaction from being able to keep up our support for Save the Children. To see more pictures from this event, visit our Facebook page.

3- Salud y Bienestar: Todos deberán tener acceso a educación primaria

6- Agua Limpia y Saneamiento: Todos deberán tener acceso a agua limpia y servicios sanitarios

9- Industria, Innovación e Infraestructura: Infraestructura resistente e industrias sostenibles

For the past few weeks, the ABC has been focusing on its Global value, due to the events and activities of an international nature we have been having recently, such as United Nations Week and the Colour Run to benefit Save the Children.

Our main focus with the Global value, is to have children recognise the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN, which will lead the way towards global development for the next 15 years.
During these weeks, our students have become a bit more familiar with each objective, but we are including a brief explanation in this blog post so you can talk about this at home and see that even though these are very ambitious goals, there are always ways to act locally and have a global impact.

1.       No Poverty – Nobody will be living on the equivalent of less than $1.25 per day

2.       Zero Hunger – No child will go to bed hungry and infant mortality will be reduced

University Visits and Careers Fair

The ABC has always prided itself in being an institution that prepares its students for life further beyond their school years and an integral part of this process is our work in the areas of university and career guidance.

This year, we have had campus visits from a number of prestigious international universities, from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Spain and the United Arab Emirates.

University visits are of great value to our students, as in most cases, this is the only chance they will have to meet with their representatives. During these opportunities, students can ask questions and find out all about a specific university, especially what these offer for international students.

We strongly encourage our pupils to interact with different universities so that they can make more informed choice when the time comes to apply, since admissions representatives are able to provide more information than what can be found in a brochure or online.

This past Thursday we had our biggest University and Career Guidance event of the year, with Careers Day and a large university fair.

During Careers Day, Grade 11 students had the chance to choose among different talks with professionals in the fields they might be interested in pursuing in the future. We had visits from doctors, diplomats, chefs and pilots, to name just a few.

In addition to these talks, Grade 11 joined students from Grades 9, 10 and 12 at our University Fair, where we had stands from Universidad de Navarra, Georgia Southern University, Universidad Anahuac, and any other international and local institutions.

We would like to remind parents that it is never too early to start talking with your child about their future, and that the last four years of secondary school are crucial to university planning. If you would like to know more about how to help your child with this process, do not hesitate to contact Mrs. María Eugenia Vides or Mr. Eric Quijano for an appointment.

We are eager to welcome more higher education institutions during the rest of the school year and look forward to seeing both students and parents getting involved.

The IPC, or International Primary Curriculum is used in the ABC for students in Pre-Kinder through Grade 5 , along with the British National Curriculum to ensure that they have the most advantageous learning opportunities possible. The IPC has been designed to ensure rigorous learning but also to help teachers make learning exciting, active and meaningful for children. It takes a global approach, helping children connect their learning to where they live as well as looking at their learning from other people's perspectives. This program is used by schools in more than 90 countries around the world and the ABC is aiming towards receiving an accreditation from this organization.
This week, we had a visit from Helen O'Donoghue, an IPC consultant and trainer who came to see how our school was working towards the goal of becoming IPC accredited. She had a chance to sit in on various lessons and talk to parents, students and teachers about their experience with this program.
She also delivered training to the Primary Leadership Team and milepost co-ordinators relating to leading the IPC, as well as training all subject specialists, such as art, regarding how the school values can be delivered through their subject areas.
In addition she trained all staff in relation to the rigor of their curriculum and other important IPC elements, during a separate session.

Helen was delighted by the ABC , and was especially pleased with our Early Years facilities, which she stated were perfect for our students. Most importantly, she also enjoyed seeing how ABC teachers, parents and students are great ambassadors to the school and how the community works together so pleasantly.

Our school has always taken great pride in the quality of education provided to our students and we are extremely pleased that we are on the right path toward receiving an IPC accreditation.

McLay Fun Run

On Friday September 30th and Friday October 7th, students from all grades in the Primary school participated in the much awaited McLay Fun Run. This event honours former Head of Primary, Stuart McLay, who was always keen about promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for children.

Pre-Kinder through Grade 4 had the chance to run around the circuit in the bottom car park and some managed to run an impressive 2,400 m in just 15 minutes!
Grade 5 had a specially designated 2000 metre circuit at Parque Bicentenario, which they thoroughly enjoyed along with their teachers and parents.

It was definitely a fun event for all those involved, which would not have been possible without the help of the PE Department and the Madres Enlace. Congratulations to all of our runners!
