Leadership and MLK Day / Liderazgo y Día de Martin Luther King Jr.

This year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day assembly began with this week's ABC value and a quality Martin Luther King Jr. displayed throughout his lifetime: leadershipThe purpose of the assembly was to celebrate MLK Day and leadership, inspire ABC students to think about their own leadership and how they can make a local and global impact.

Mr. Keslake gave the opening remarks about the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and how he “spoke as a citizen of the world” (The Trumpet of Conscience, 1967). He believed in peaceful protest and led by example, like a true leader.

Following this, Mr. Keslake presented the students with an MLK quote: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”

In his speech, Mr. Keslake also talked about the 25th Anniversary of El Salvador's Peace Accords. He explained how signing a Peace Accord is not a simple matter. In the same way that Martin Luther King Jr. was able to achieve some equality regarding civil rights, his success wasn't the end of the story, in a way it was the beginning, and although the arc of the universe does bend towards justice, it is a gradual process.

During the assembly Mr. Keslake gave the students great advice. He told them to trust people, and to find examples of leadership around them. He concluded by encouraging students and telling them that “leadership is for everyone”.
